If you ever happen to bump into me you’d know I’m a hypnosis fanatic! It was the very first skill I ever learned on my journey into complementary therapy and, oh boy, was it a mind-blowing experience! It was like discovering a whole new dimension of awesome.
The more I explored the intricacies of the brain and our behaviour, the more enamoured I became with hypnotherapy. Watching depression, anxiety, fears, phobias, and negative thoughts disappear in a snap from my clients was like witnessing miracles before my very eyes!
My journey in hypnotherapy had a rocky start, as the course I attended didn’t quite match my expectations. However, I continued to believe that this was my true calling in life.
One day, a friend told me about a world-famous renowned Hypnotherapist who was living just 10 minutes away from me. Although this expert was living in Dubai and was planning to retire in Spain, I simply had to meet her.
We shared a coffee, during which I learned more about hypnosis than I ever had during my course. I was so impressed that I asked her personally to train me. Unfortunately, she reiterated her retirement plans and declined my request. At that point, I decided to take matters into my own hands and, dare I say it, I may have even stalked her for a while! lol
But my persistence paid off! Finally, she agreed to train me, and the experience was nothing short of exceptional. To this day, I remain grateful for the opportunity to learn from the best in the business. Such an amazing person and Mentor. Thanks Beryl.
I was so hooked on learning everything there was to know that I almost needed to put myself in a trance just to break the spell. That’s how much I love this stuff!
But As I began my career in hypnosis, I couldn’t help but notice the outdated beliefs people had about it.
Whenever someone asked about my profession, their reactions were priceless – from averting eye contact to assuming I could make them give me their credit card details, act like a chicken, or dance like Elvis on command. If I could pull off such feats, I’d be living the high life living in a mansion with Brad Pitt as my loyal butler!
When it comes to hypnosis, most folks tend to visualise a cheesy magician waving a pocket watch and commanding people to do silly stunts on stage. Truth be told, the reality of hypnosis is far from this amusing spectacle.
Do you know that hypnosis is our brain’s sneaky way of taking a quick time-out? Yup, it’s true! Think about it – have you ever watched a movie or read a book and lost track of time?
That’s your brain slipping into a self-hypnotic state! Or how about driving somewhere and not remembering some of the places you passed by? Yup, that’s self-hypnosis too!
And let’s not forget everyone’s favourite pastime – staring into space, and noticing how great you felt after, or maybe you came up with a fab idea! Congratulations, you’re a natural at self-hypnosis!
Yet, even with its naturalness, there are oodles of false beliefs and hearsay about hypnosis that can make one’s head spin. But fear not, In this piece, we’ll be busting some of the most common myths and rumours surrounding hypnosis and give you a glimpse of what hypnosis is really like.
ALL HYPNOSIS IS STAGE HYPNOSIS
Have you ever watched a stage hypnosis show? It’s definitely entertaining, but did you know that hypnosis is way more than just a fun act?
Hypnosis is a versatile tool that has various applications in clinics, hospitals, therapy, and counselling.
It can help people overcome fears and phobias, manage pain, and even tackle mental health issues like depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD! So, the next time you think hypnosis is just a gimmick, think again. It’s a natural and widely used tool that can do wonders for our well-being
YOU WILL NOT REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED WHILST HYPNOTISED
Did you hear the one about hypnosis making you lose control? Yeah, it’s a total myth! Contrary to popular belief, the person being hypnotised retains complete control over their actions.
The conscious mind is still running the show, but hypnosis just helps it relax a bit so that suggestions from the subconscious can sneak in more easily. So, you won’t suddenly start clucking like a chicken or dancing like a disco queen unless you already wanted to do that in the first place!
ONLY WEAK-MINDED PEOPLE CAN BE HYPNOTISED
If you think people who get hypnotised are weak-minded, then you better think again! In reality, it’s quite the opposite.
The ones who can focus their minds and have a great imagination are the real champs in the world of hypnosis. Let’s face it, we all have a level of vulnerability to suggestion but, if someone is offering us something beneficial, then why wouldn’t we want to achieve it?
Going against that would just be plain silly but we are all capable of hypnosis at the end of the day. We are the ultimate self-hypnotist!
We have successfully programmed ourselves with all those negative beliefs and issues, which might not seem like a good thing at first, but let’s be real – we are pretty impressive!
I mean, if we can master the art of negative thinking, imagine the possibilities of turning it all around into positive thoughts!
YOU ARE ASLEEP IN HYPNOSIS
Let me debunk this sleeping myth Just because your eyes are closed- you’re not catching some Z’s during a session. Nope, you’re wide awake and aware of your surroundings.
You can even chat with me the entire time if you’d like! It’s a shame the public has been misled for centuries into thinking hypnosis is all about snoozing. In reality, you’re mentally active and engaged in a trance. Trust me, you won’t be caught snoring in my office!
IN HYPNOSIS, YOU WILL REVEAL PERSONAL SECRETS
Did you know that under hypnosis, you can spin a tale just as easily as you can in your normal, conscious state?
Hypnosis can even give you access to more creative ways to fib as you open up to your unconscious mind. Don’t worry, though – you’re always the one in charge of what information you want to share or keep hidden.
After all, hypnosis is your choice, and no one can make you do anything you don’t want to do. So, rest assured that no secrets will slip out and you won’t lose control of your actions.
